L’odorat, For smell

(In Flight Between Two Gardens)

oil painting on canvas 2022

Dedicated to smell, who’s wings invoke remembrance. Upon our breath these fragrances unfurl a garden of memory and transport us to moments past. The olfactory system is closely entwined with the limbic system which processes emotion and memory, so with each breath rests the possibility to inhabit these distant times. Smell can act as a warning, as a messenger, as a summoning, as a medicine. We communicate through smell whether or not we are aware of it by releasing and responding to pheromones and the hormones they regulate.

Here a scent is being sent inside an envelope ( a valentine) carried by a pigeon through the sky of our breath and arriving to the brain-shell where it is planted as a sprouting seed. The red filigree of memory is wafting from the petals of the rose and tangles itself backwards and forwards through the mind.
