À Mon Seul Désir

(The Sixth Sense)

oil painting on canvas 2022

In the series of medieval tapestries, ‘La Dame à la Licorne’ there is a weaving to depict each of five physical senses, and one last more mysterious sense, that which dwells perhaps less in the body and more in the soul. What is sometimes called our intuition or psychic sense, the medieval tapestry depicts the same woman accompanied by her unicorn and lion in front of a tent of treasures inscribed with the words, ‘à mon seul desir’ (to my only desire).

What is the difference between love and desire? Does it dwell in the body or somewhere else?

To my only desire; the changing waters within us all.

(Painted after three months of watching the river flow over and under the bridge of Marnay-Sur-Seine.)
